IGCSE maths past papers: a method that actually raises marks
Past papers raise marks when four things happen: the right papers are chosen, they are timed like the real exam, they are marked with the official mark scheme, and every lost mark goes into a log. Working through a pile of papers without those steps mostly repeats the same mistakes. Here is the method we use with IGCSE students, with the details that matter in the UAE.

IGCSE past papers work when they are chosen, timed, marked and logged
Doing more papers is the most common revision plan and one of the least efficient. A student who finishes thirty papers and checks only the final answers will usually lose marks in the same places in paper thirty as in paper one.
The four steps below turn each paper into a short list of things to fix. They apply to Cambridge IGCSE 0580 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE 4MA1 alike, with a few differences noted where the two boards part ways.
Step 1: the right papers
Step 1: match the paper to your child's IGCSE tier and board
A paper from the wrong tier or the wrong board is practice for somebody else's exam. Start from the specification code and tier.

Cambridge variants 1, 2 and 3
Cambridge sets several versions of each paper in a series, called variants, and sends different time zones different ones. The last digit of the component code names the variant: 0580/42 is Paper 4, variant 2.
For practice, every variant counts. They are written to the same standard, so one June series gives you up to three Paper 4s instead of one. Your school's exams officer can tell you which variant your zone usually receives, which is the one to save for final mocks.
Pearson R papers in the UAE
In the June series, Pearson has UAE centres sit regional "R" versions of most International GCSE papers, maths among them. The specification and mark allocation are identical; the questions are not. November papers are the standard versions.
When you download June 4MA1 papers for a student in the UAE, include the R versions. They are the closest thing to what your child will actually open in the exam hall.
What happened in June 2026
Cambridge and Pearson both confirmed that their June 2026 exams would not go ahead in the UAE and awarded grades through school evidence instead, which for many students meant carefully run mock papers. Arrangements for 2027 rest with each board, so ask your school's exams officer what applies to your child's series.
Keep the two most recent series untouched for final mocks. Everything older is working material.

Step 2: timing
Step 2: time every IGCSE paper by the mark, not the question
0580 Extended and 4MA1 both give 120 minutes for 100 marks, which is 1.2 minutes a mark. 0580 Core gives 90 minutes for 80 marks, a little over 1.1. Practise at that pace.
Write the finish time at the top of the paper, not the start time. It is the number that matters.
Check the clock at halfway. You should be about halfway through the marks, which is not the same as halfway through the questions — later questions carry more.
Give a stuck question two minutes, then move on. Circle it and return at the end.
Keep the last five minutes for checking units, rounding, and whether the question wanted a particular form of answer.
Practise the non-calculator papers separately. On 0580 Papers 1 and 2, slow fraction arithmetic and long multiplication drain time from every later question.
Step 3: marking
Step 3: mark with the official scheme, because method marks decide grades
The answer at the back of a revision book tells you whether the final line was right. The mark scheme tells you where each mark came from — and in IGCSE maths many marks are awarded for method, not the final number.

Mark schemes also use short forms such as oe (or equivalent), cao (correct answer only) and isw (ignore subsequent working); check the key printed in the scheme you are using. The lesson is the same on every paper: show the working, even with a calculator.
Step 4: the error log
Step 4: log every lost mark by the kind of error
After marking, write down each lost mark with the paper, question, topic and a retest date a week later. Then give it one of four labels, because each needs a different fix. A fourth label, concept, covers topics that were never learned and simply need teaching.

Method
The topic was known but the steps went wrong — inverse functions rearranged in the wrong order, say. The fix is worked practice on that method until it is automatic.

Accuracy
Arithmetic slips, early rounding, a dropped minus sign. The fix is a checking habit, not more teaching: substitute the answer back, and round only at the end.

Reading
The student answered a different question, such as the lower bound when the upper bound of a perimeter was asked. The fix is slower reading and underlining what is wanted.

How many IGCSE maths past papers should my child do?
Enough to cover the last five or six years for their tier, variants included, each one marked with the scheme and logged. Ten papers with a proper error log do more than thirty checked against the answers only.
Should UAE students practise with Pearson R papers?
Yes, for June practice. UAE centres sit the R versions of most 4MA1 and other International GCSE papers in the June series, so those are the nearest match to the real exam.
Which Cambridge variant should my child use?
All of them. Variants 1, 2 and 3 are set to the same standard, so using every variant triples the practice from each series. Save the variant your zone usually receives for final mocks.
What does M1 A1 mean on a mark scheme?
M1 is one mark for a correct method; A1 is one mark for the accurate result that follows from it. Because the A mark usually depends on the M mark, an answer with no working can score zero even when it is right.

ClassArc is a one-on-one online tutoring service. We provide live, scheduled classes between a teacher and a student, along with homework, feedback, and study support.
Classes and scheduling
Each class is 55 minutes. You can reschedule or cancel a class up to 5 minutes before it starts. If you miss a class without notice, we usually credit it back to your balance and reschedule based on what works for the teacher and student.
Payment
The first demo class is free, no card required. After that, plans are billed in advance for the number of classes you choose (8, 24, or ~48). We'll send you a payment link directly once you've picked a plan.
Refunds
If you want to stop classes at any point, we refund whatever class balance is left on your plan. No questions asked, no friction. Refunds are processed within 7 business days.
Code of conduct
We expect students and parents to treat teachers with respect, and teachers to do the same. We reserve the right to end the relationship if classes become unsafe, abusive, or disruptive, with a full refund of any unused balance.
