A parent's guide to Year 13 maths in England, the A-level exam year — how the papers differ from board to board, what the formulae booklet does and does not give you, a term-by-term plan, and what results day looks like either way.

What happens in Year 13 maths?

Year 13 carries two jobs at once: finish the remaining content, and revise two years of it. Teaching of new content commonly runs into the spring term, which is why the revision window is shorter than families expect.

The exam is three papers, all sat in the same summer series, with nothing banked from Year 12. Under the current arrangements in England there is no autumn series for A-level maths — November is GCSE English language and maths only. Exceptional A-level autumn series did run in 2020 and 2021, but they were exactly that. A student who wants to improve an A-level grade waits for the following summer.

The papers are not the same across boards, and this matters more at A-level than at GCSE. AQA, Edexcel and OCR A all run three two-hour papers worth 100 marks each, but they distribute the content differently; OCR B (MEI) is structured differently again: three two-hour papers still, but 275 marks in total and a comprehension section in the third. The table below sets all four out.

The two things that move marks this year are not a secret: whole past papers under timed conditions, marked against the real mark scheme, and enough algebraic fluency that the marks are lost to the maths rather than to the arithmetic.

From each board's published specification. Two things students get wrong: AQA and OCR A are mirror images of each other, with mechanics and statistics on opposite papers, and AQA is the only board that attaches vectors to the mechanics paper rather than the pure one. OCR withdrew its separate statistical tables booklet on the basis that the calculator students are required to have will produce those values; a short normal-distribution table is still printed in the paper.

What actually moves marks in Year 13

Four things, in the order we would do them. None of them involves buying anything.

Whole past papers, timed and marked against the scheme

Two hours is a long paper and stamina is a real variable. A student who only ever does questions has never found out what happens to their accuracy in the ninetieth minute.

One paper a fortnight from February, with a full hour afterwards on what went wrong.

The hour afterwards is the lesson. The paper is only the diagnosis.

Where it usually goes wrong Practising with another board's papers because they were easier to find. At A-level that is a genuinely different exam, not a near-enough one.

Algebraic fluency, still

It matters as much in Year 13 as it did in Year 12. Marks go far more often to a sign error four lines into a question than to not knowing how to integrate at all.

  • Manipulating expressions at speed, without hesitation
  • Surds, indices and logarithm laws applied rather than recalled
  • Rearranging before substituting, not after
  • Checking an answer is the right size before moving on
Quick check

Simplify √50 − √18, and write 8 to the power minus two thirds as a fraction.

5√2 − 3√2 = 2√2, and one quarter. If either takes real thought, that is worth a fortnight of attention on its own.

Where it usually goes wrong Time lost to arithmetic reads on a mark scheme exactly like not knowing the topic. It is worth separating the two before deciding what to revise.

The large data set, finally used

It has been sitting there for two years. In Year 13 it becomes marks, because the statistics questions assume the context rather than explaining it.

  • Know what the variables are and roughly what values they take
  • Know where the data is incomplete, and why that matters
  • Practise the statistics questions from your board specifically
  • Do not try to memorise values — that is not what is examined
What it buys

The examiner assumes you know the context, so the question does not stop to explain it.

Which means an unfamiliar student spends their first two minutes working out what the question is about, on a paper where two minutes matters.

Where it usually goes wrong Every board uses a different data set. Revision material for the wrong one is worse than none, because it is confidently wrong.

Reasoning, modelling and the marks that are not method

Half the marks at A-level are for using and applying standard techniques. A quarter are for reasoning, interpreting and communicating, and a quarter for solving problems in and out of context — which is where modelling marks sit, and which is what students most often leave on the table.

  • Say why a method was chosen, not just carry it out
  • State modelling assumptions in mechanics; they are marks
  • Write statistical conclusions in the context of the question
  • Structure a proof properly rather than showing it works for one case
How to check

Take a marked past paper and find the marks lost on questions the student could actually do.

Those are usually reasoning and communication marks, and in our experience they come back faster than new content does.

Where it usually goes wrong These assessment objective weightings are set by Ofqual, within a 2% tolerance, so they are the same whichever board your child sits — not a quirk of one specification.

A sensible Year 13 plan, term by term

There is no official A-level revision timetable to follow — nobody publishes one. What follows is how we would spend the year, based on teaching it.

Almost nobody fails to get the grade because of the last topic taught. They get there having never gone back to the first one.

Short sessions, sleep, and the right calculator in the bag — in exam mode, or with nothing stored on it that could be read during the paper. Two-hour papers reward being rested more than they reward one more topic.

Results day, and what happens if it is not the grade

A-level results come out in August, normally the Thursday a week before GCSE results — earlier than many families expect, and the week universities confirm places. JCQ sets the exact dates for each series, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

A-level maths is graded A* to E, with U below that, on the combined total across the three papers. Individual papers are not graded, and there is no partial credit carried from Year 12.

If the grade is not what was needed, the options are narrower than at GCSE and worth knowing in advance. As things currently stand in England, there is no November series for A-level maths — the autumn series is GCSE English language and maths only. The routes are a review of marking, a place through clearing, or a retake in the following summer series.

A review of marking is requested through the school rather than by the family — private candidates apply to the board themselves — and there are deadlines. It is worth asking the exams officer the same week rather than the following month.

On what the grade opens: UCAS lists maths among the subjects it is useful to have studied first for maths and statistics, engineering and technology, physics and astronomy, and economics — while stating plainly that requirements vary by provider and course. Individual universities set their own, so their published entry requirements are the only reliable source.

None of this requires knowing any A-level maths. The first three are the ones that most often go undone.

How many A-level maths papers are there?
Three, sat in the same summer series at the end of Year 13. With AQA, Edexcel and OCR A each paper is two hours and worth 100 marks, giving 300 in total. OCR B (MEI) differs: all three papers are still two hours, but the third carries 75 marks rather than 100 — the reduction leaves reading time for a 15-mark comprehension section on an unseen passage — giving 275 in total.
Are the papers the same for every exam board?
No, and the differences matter for revision. Edexcel is the only board with two dedicated pure papers and a single combined applied paper. AQA and OCR A are mirror images of each other: AQA puts mechanics on Paper 2 and statistics on Paper 3, OCR A does the reverse. AQA is also the only board that attaches vectors to the mechanics paper rather than the pure one.
What should we download before the exams?
Whatever the board actually gives candidates, so that revision matches the paper. AQA and Edexcel each publish a formulae and statistical tables booklet used in the exam. OCR publishes none for A-level maths — its formulae sit on pages 2 and 3 of the question paper instead — so there the equivalent job is to open a past paper and see what is printed. Alongside that, the DfE publishes the list of formulae students must know unaided, which is the more useful document of the two.
When are A-level exams and when do results come out?
The papers sit in the summer series across May and June, and A-level results are issued in August, normally the Thursday a week before GCSE results. JCQ publishes the exact date for each series, and schools receive results shortly before students do.
Can you resit A-level maths in November?
No. As things stand in England the autumn series covers GCSE English language and maths only, so there is no November route for A-level maths. If a grade needs improving, the options are a review of marking through the school, a place through clearing, or a retake in the following summer series.
What calculator is allowed in A-level maths?
One that meets the subject content requirements: an iterative function and the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions, with AQA additionally requiring an inverse normal function. Graphical calculators are permitted unless a board prohibits them, and exam mode is acceptable. Symbolic algebra and symbolic calculus are banned, though numerical integration and differentiation are fine, and no information stored before the exam may be accessible.
How should my child revise for A-level maths?
Three things, in this order. Complete papers from their own board under exam timing, because two hours is long enough that stamina is part of the test. Then a proper post-mortem on each one, sorting the lost marks into method, arithmetic and genuinely not knowing, since those need three different responses. Then deliberate work on reasoning and communication, which carry half the paper and are rarely revised on purpose.
Does the large data set still matter in Year 13?
Yes, and this is where it pays. Statistics questions are written to assume familiarity with the context, so they do not stop to explain the variables. It is not about memorising values — the data is not printed in the exam, beyond selected figures or summary statistics inside a question. Every board uses a different set, so material for the wrong one is actively unhelpful.
Is it too late to get help in Year 13?
That depends entirely on what is wrong, which is why we would want to look first. Technique, algebraic speed and single weak topics all respond well inside a term. Large parts of Year 12 never landed is a different situation and needs a longer plan and a frank conversation about what is realistic.
