Year 10 (ages 14–15)
The year the course is taught. Content is met for the first time rather than revised, and nothing external is at stake — which is exactly why it goes unnoticed when something is missed.
- Quadratics: expanding, factorising and solving
- Simultaneous equations, and rearranging formulae
- Trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles at higher tier
- Compound percentages, reverse percentages, growth and decay
- The harder geometry: circle theorems and vector proof at higher tier
- Data handling: cumulative frequency, box plots, histograms at higher tier
Algebra met in Year 9 and never made fluent.
Year 10 assumes expanding, factorising and rearranging and builds quadratics straight on top. A gap here is why new topics stop sticking.
Where it usually goes wrong In schools running a three-year GCSE, much of this arrives in Year 9 instead. Ask which model the school uses — it changes when the pressure lands.
