The choice that shapes those careers comes at 15 or 16: which maths course, at which level, your child takes for A-Level, the IB or CBSE Class 11–12, because that decides which degrees stay open.

Maths careers in the UAE depend on the maths course chosen at 16
Finance, aviation, energy, AI and data are all well established in the UAE, and every one of them relies on maths. The route into those careers usually runs through a maths-heavy degree, and the most selective of those degrees name the exact school maths course they want.
That makes the sixth-form choice the real decision point: A-Level Maths with or without Further Maths, IB Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at Standard or Higher Level, or Maths alongside Physics and Chemistry in CBSE Class 11 and 12.
Sectors
Four UAE sectors where maths does the heavy lifting
These are examples of roles that use maths every day, not predictions about jobs or salaries.
Finance and financial services
Dubai's DIFC and Abu Dhabi's ADGM host banks, insurers, asset managers and fintech firms.
Actuary: prices risk for insurers and pension funds using probability and statistics.
Quantitative analyst: builds pricing and trading models, usually after a maths, physics or engineering degree.
Risk or financial analyst, economist: statistics, modelling and a great deal of spreadsheet work.

Aviation and aerospace
The UAE is a global aviation hub, with major airlines, airports and engineering operations.
Aerospace or mechanical engineer: aerodynamics and structures, built on calculus, vectors and mechanics.
Operations research analyst: plans schedules, crews and routes with optimisation, one of the most direct business uses of applied maths.
Pilot: relies on confident arithmetic, trigonometry and vectors for navigation.
Energy and sustainability
Alongside large oil and gas operations, the UAE runs major solar and nuclear projects.
Petroleum, chemical or electrical engineer: calculus, differential equations and physics.
Energy analyst: forecasts demand and output with statistics and modelling.
Environmental modeller: climate, water and emissions models.
AI, data and technology
The UAE has a national AI strategy and a university dedicated to the field, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi.
Data scientist or machine learning engineer: statistics, probability, linear algebra and calculus.
Software engineer: discrete maths, logic and algorithms.
Cybersecurity specialist or cryptographer: number theory and discrete maths.
Architecture, medicine, pharmacy, logistics, teaching and research all use more maths than students tend to expect, from statistics to dosage calculations.

These three examples come from each university's own course page, checked in September 2026. Requirements change every year, so always check the page for your child's entry year.

Many other universities accept A-Level Maths alone or IB Applications and Interpretation for courses that use maths less intensively. The pattern at the top is the useful signal: Further Maths on the A-Level route, AA at Higher Level on the IB route.
Other destinations
UAE, Indian and other universities set their own maths rules
Engineering and science programmes at UAE universities generally expect maths through the final year of school, and often physics too, with minimum grades set by each programme and sometimes an admissions test. Read the specific programme's admissions page before Class 11 or Year 12 subjects are fixed.
In India, engineering admission through JEE Main expects Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, with further eligibility conditions published each year in the NTA information bulletin. Students educated abroad should also check whether their target institutions run a separate route for them.
Universities in Canada, the US and Europe publish course-level maths requirements too, and many name a specific IB course or a minimum HL grade. The rule is the same everywhere: check the course page, not a general league-table summary.
At 15 or 16
What each curriculum should keep open for a maths-heavy degree
A-Level: Maths is essential for most of these routes, and Further Maths is required or expected for the most selective maths courses. If the school doesn't offer Further Maths, contact universities early.
IB Diploma: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level keeps the widest set of maths-heavy degrees open; Applications and Interpretation is accepted for many other courses.
CBSE: keep Mathematics (041) in Class 11 and 12 alongside Physics and Chemistry for engineering, and check the school's rules before choosing Basic over Standard in Class 10.
IGCSE: a strong Extended or Higher grade, and ideally Cambridge Additional Mathematics (0606), makes the step up to A-Level or AA HL far easier.

Finance around the DIFC and ADGM, aviation and aerospace, energy, and AI and data all rely heavily on maths and have a large UAE presence. Actuaries, quantitative analysts, engineers, data scientists and operations research analysts are common maths-based roles.
Does my child need Further Maths to study maths at a UK university?
For the most selective courses, usually yes. Cambridge asks for Maths and Further Maths, Imperial asks for A* in both, and LSE expects Further Maths where the school offers it. Many other universities accept Maths alone, so check each course.
Is IB Maths AI enough for a maths-heavy degree?
Sometimes, but not for the most selective ones. Cambridge requires Analysis and Approaches, LSE's Mathematics and Economics asks for a 7 in AA, and Imperial prefers AA over AI. Check every course on the shortlist before choosing AI.

When you book a demo or sign up for classes, we collect your name, your child's name, email, WhatsApp number, time zone, and the grade you're inquiring about. That's it. Who sees it
Your teacher, and the small team supporting them at ClassArc. We never sell, rent, or share your information with anyone outside ClassArc. We use Web3Forms to receive form submissions, and standard email and WhatsApp for messaging, nothing else.
Your child's information
We treat any information about your child with extra care. We only collect what we need to teach them well, such as their grade and what they're working on. We never use a child's photo, name, or work in any marketing without the parent's explicit written permission.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you what we have on file, correct anything inaccurate, or delete your data entirely, at any time. Just email hello@theclassarc.com and we'll handle it within a few days.
ClassArc is a one-on-one online tutoring service. We provide live, scheduled classes between a teacher and a student, along with homework, feedback, and study support.
Classes and scheduling
Each class is 55 minutes. You can reschedule or cancel a class up to 5 minutes before it starts. If you miss a class without notice, we usually credit it back to your balance and reschedule based on what works for the teacher and student.
Payment
The first demo class is free, no card required. After that, plans are billed in advance for the number of classes you choose (8, 24, or ~48). We'll send you a payment link directly once you've picked a plan.
Refunds
If you want to stop classes at any point, we refund whatever class balance is left on your plan. No questions asked, no friction. Refunds are processed within 7 business days.
Code of conduct
We expect students and parents to treat teachers with respect, and teachers to do the same. We reserve the right to end the relationship if classes become unsafe, abusive, or disruptive, with a full refund of any unused balance.

If we update these terms, we'll email you before the changes take effect, so you have time to review them.
