Before you read

Most IGCSE maths questions start with one fact: the paper code

Nearly every answer below depends on which course your child sits. The code on the front of any school test tells you: 0580 is Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, 4MA1 is Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A, 4MB1 is Edexcel Maths B, and 1MA1 is the UK domestic GCSE.

Answers about papers, grades and formulas follow the Cambridge 0580 syllabus for 2025–2027 and the Pearson 4MA1 specification. Where something is decided by your school, such as tier entry, the answer says so.

Boards and specifications

What is the difference between Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE maths?
They are separate qualifications from separate exam boards, covering similar mathematics. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is tiered Core or Extended and graded A* to G; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A (4MA1) is tiered Foundation or Higher and graded 9 to 1. Papers and formula lists differ, so your child should practise from their own board.
How do I find out which board my child is on?
Look at the cover of a school test or mock. 0580 means Cambridge, 4MA1 or 4MB1 means Edexcel International GCSE, and 1MA1 means the UK GCSE. Many UAE British schools choose GCSE or IGCSE subject by subject, so maths may differ from your child's other subjects.
What are Cambridge 0606 and 0607?
0606 is Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics, a harder course some strong students take alongside 0580, useful groundwork for A-Level or IB Analysis and Approaches HL. 0607 is Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics, an alternative to 0580 that uses a graphic display calculator. Check the current syllabus on Cambridge's site for paper details.
Is IGCSE maths harder than GCSE maths?
Not in any simple sense; the content overlaps heavily. The structure differs: Cambridge 0580 has two papers per tier with one non-calculator, the UK GCSE has three papers with one non-calculator, and Edexcel 4MA1 has two papers that both allow a calculator. Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

What is the difference between Core and Extended?
Core covers a smaller syllabus, leads to grades C to G, and is examined by Papers 1 and 3 (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks each). Extended covers the full syllabus, including functions, differentiation, vectors, the sine and cosine rules and histograms, leads to grades A* to E, and is examined by Papers 2 and 4 (2 hours, 100 marks each).
Can a Core student get an A?
No. The highest grade on Cambridge Core is C, so a child who needs a B or above must be entered for Extended. On Edexcel 4MA1, Foundation tops out at grade 5.
Who decides the tier, and when?
The school does, usually during the final IGCSE year, using mock and classwork results. Entries close months before the exam, so if the tier looks wrong, talk to the maths department in the autumn term.
Should a child heading for A-Level or IB maths take Extended?
Usually, yes. A-Level Maths and IB Analysis and Approaches build straight on Extended or Higher algebra, functions and quadratics. A Core student can move on to IB Applications and Interpretation SL, but will have real gaps to close first.

R papers in the UAE

What are the R papers?
In the June series, Pearson has UAE centres sit regional versions of most International GCSE papers, identified by an R in the code — 4MA1/1HR, for example. The specification is unchanged; the questions are different.
Does my child need different revision for the R papers?
No new topics are involved. When practising June past papers, though, use the R version where Pearson has released it, because that is the paper UAE candidates sat. The R arrangement is Pearson's and does not apply to Cambridge.

Grades

How are IGCSE maths grades awarded?
Cambridge 0580 grades from A* to G: Extended candidates can reach A* to E, Core candidates C to G. Edexcel 4MA1 grades from 9 to 1, with 9 highest: Higher covers 9 to 4 with a grade 3 allowed, Foundation 5 to 1. Grade boundaries are set after each series, so the mark needed for a grade shifts from year to year.
Is a Cambridge A the same as an Edexcel 7?
Not officially, because they are different qualifications. As a rough guide, the 9–1 scale was designed so that a 7 lines up with the bottom of the old A and a 4 with the bottom of the old C. Sixth forms and universities often treat the two as broadly comparable, but check their published requirements.
What grade does my child need for A-Level or IB maths?
Each school sets its own entry requirement, and for A-Level Maths or IB Analysis and Approaches HL it is typically one of the top grades, often from the Extended or Higher tier. The sixth-form handbook at your child's school is the place to check.

Calculators and formulas

Which IGCSE maths papers allow a calculator?
On Cambridge 0580, Papers 1 and 2 are non-calculator and Papers 3 and 4 need a scientific calculator; graphical and algebraic calculators are not allowed. On Edexcel 4MA1, a calculator may be used on both papers.
Is there a formula sheet?
Yes, but a short one. Cambridge prints a list on page 2 of each paper, mostly area and volume plus the quadratic formula, sine rule and cosine rule at Extended. Edexcel prints four formulas at Foundation and thirteen at Higher. Pythagoras, SOH CAH TOA and arc length are given on neither; the IGCSE maths formula sheet has the full lists.

Revision

When should my child start revising for IGCSE maths?
Focused revision works best starting about twelve weeks before the first paper — around February for the May/June series. Keeping up through Year 10 / Grade 9 matters more than any plan, because IGCSE maths builds on itself.
What is the best way to revise IGCSE maths?
Questions from your child's own board, marked with the official scheme, with each lost mark written into an error log and revisited. The topic checklist finds the weak areas and the revision guide puts them in order.

Tutoring

Does my child need an IGCSE maths tutor?
Not always. A tutor helps most with a specific gap (often algebra), a child between tiers, a move from another curriculum, or revision that needs structure. ClassArc's free first class is a real 55-minute lesson, and afterwards we tell you what we found — including when tutoring is not needed.
How much does IGCSE maths tutoring cost in the UAE?
Published rates vary. EdFlik's 2026 UAE tutoring guide, a commercial guide rather than official data, quotes roughly AED 100–200 an hour for IGCSE-level tuition. ClassArc's IGCSE classes are 55 minutes and one-to-one, from AED 60 a class on the largest block and AED 70 on the eight-class Starter. How often should my child have classes?
Two classes a week suits most IGCSE students, three a week in the run-up to exams, and one a week to maintain a child who is already secure.
