A parent's guide to the Year 1 maths curriculum in England — what your child will meet in their first year of key stage 1, what good progress looks like at five and six, and the small things at home that matter more than anything you could buy.

What does a child learn in Year 1 maths?

Year 1 is the first year of key stage 1 and the first year of the national curriculum proper — Reception follows the early years framework instead. The year is mostly about numbers to 100: counting them, reading and writing them, and knowing what they are made of.

The idea Year 1 leans on hardest is number bonds within 20. Knowing that 7 and 3 make 10, without counting, is what the year is building, and much of Year 2 assumes it. Alongside that come the first fractions (halves and quarters), the first measures, shapes and turns, and the language of comparison — more than, less than, most, least.

There is no maths test in Year 1. The one statutory assessment is the phonics screening check in June, which is about reading, not maths. Children in Reception take a baseline assessment in their first weeks, which includes some early maths, but it is used to measure the school's progress over time and is not reported to you as a score — though the school receives a short set of statements about your child and must give them to you if you ask.

Schools cover the content in their own order, and are only required to have taught the key stage 1 programme by the end of Year 2 — so a topic your child has not met in the spring term is not a gap.

Six areas, what each one covers, and the thing that most often needs another go.

Number and place value

Counting to 100 and back, from any number, and starting to see what the digits mean.

  • Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, from any given number
  • Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in 2s, 5s and 10s
  • Given a number, say one more and one less
  • Represent numbers with objects, pictures and a number line, using the words equal to, more than, less than, fewer, most and least
  • Read and write the numbers 1 to 20 in numerals and in words

90 — and the wobble at every tens boundary is the normal one.

Where it usually goes wrong Counting confidently to 100 but not being able to start at 63. Reciting the sequence and understanding it are different skills, and only the second one is useful.

Addition and subtraction

The heart of Year 1. Number bonds within 20, the symbols, and the idea that adding and subtracting are two halves of the same thing.

  • Read, write and interpret statements with +, − and =
  • Represent and use number bonds and the related subtraction facts within 20
  • Add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0
  • Solve one-step problems with objects and pictures, including missing-number problems such as 7 = ? − 9

9 + 7 = 16, so 16 − 7 = 9 and 7 = 16 − 9.

Where it usually goes wrong Counting on from one every time. A child who works out 8 + 5 by counting from 1 has not yet grasped that they can start at 8, and that step is worth more attention than any worksheet.

Multiplication and division

Barely started, and deliberately practical. No times tables in Year 1 — just grouping and sharing with real objects.

  • Solve one-step multiplication and division problems using objects, pictures and arrays, with the teacher's support
  • Non-statutory guidance: through grouping and sharing, begin to understand multiplication, division, doubling and finding simple fractions of a quantity
  • Non-statutory guidance: connect arrays and number patterns to counting in 2s, 5s and 10s
Example

Share 12 biscuits between 3 plates.

4 each. Done with actual biscuits, this is division long before the ÷ symbol arrives.

Where it usually goes wrong Nothing here should worry you. If a child can count in 2s, 5s and 10s and share things fairly, Year 1 multiplication is where it should be.

Fractions

Two fractions, and only as parts of something real.

  • Recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity
  • Recognise, find and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity
Example

Half of 8 sweets, and a quarter of a pizza.

4 sweets, and one slice of four. The word that carries the weight is "equal".

Where it usually goes wrong Halves that are not equal. A child who cuts a shape into two unequal pieces and calls them halves has the idea of splitting, not the idea of a fraction.

Measurement

Comparing and describing first, measuring second, and telling the time to the hour and half hour.

  • Compare and describe lengths and heights, mass and weight, capacity and volume, and time
  • Begin to measure and record lengths, heights, mass, capacity and time
  • Recognise and know the value of different coins and notes
  • Sequence events in order, and use the language of days, weeks, months and years
  • Tell the time to the hour and half past, and draw the hands on a clock face to show them

Before any ruler comes out. Comparison is the Year 1 skill; the numbers come later.

Where it usually goes wrong Telling the time is the one that quietly does not stick. An analogue clock on a wall at home does more for it than any app.

Geometry: shape, position and direction

Naming shapes, and describing where things are and how they turn.

  • Recognise and name common 2-D shapes — for example rectangles including squares, circles and triangles
  • Recognise and name common 3-D shapes — for example cuboids including cubes, pyramids and spheres
  • Describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns

Turn a quarter turn to the right. What are you facing now?

The same quarter that appeared in fractions, in a different coat — which is the point.

Where it usually goes wrong Shapes recognised only in one orientation. A triangle balanced on a corner is still a triangle, and a square rotated 45° is not a diamond.

Does a Year 1 child need a maths tutor?

Usually not, and we would rather say so than sell you something.

Most children at five and six are still building the habits that make maths learnable: sitting with a problem, saying what they think, being wrong without minding. Those grow at home and at school. A weekly hour of formal tutoring is not what most Year 1 children need, and we have told parents that after a free first class more than once.

There are exceptions we do take seriously. A child who has been identified by school as needing extra support and is not getting it. A child who has moved from a different curriculum or a different country mid-year. A child who has decided, already, that they are bad at maths — that one is worth acting on at any age, because it hardens. And families who simply cannot get the school to engage.

What maths should a Year 1 child know?
By the end of Year 1 a child should count to and across 100 from any number, read and write numbers to 100 (and to 20 in words), know number bonds within 20, add and subtract to 20, find a half and a quarter of a shape or quantity, compare lengths, masses and capacities, recognise coins, tell the time to the hour and half past, name common 2-D and 3-D shapes, and describe turns.
Do Year 1 children learn times tables?
No. Year 1 counts in 2s, 5s and 10s and solves grouping and sharing problems with objects and arrays, but there is no times-table recall in the Year 1 programme of study. The 2, 5 and 10 tables are Year 2; the 3, 4 and 8 tables are Year 3; everything to 12 × 12 is Year 4.
Is there a test in Year 1?
Not in maths. The one statutory assessment in Year 1 is the phonics screening check in June, which is about reading words rather than maths. What are number bonds, and why do they matter so much?
Number bonds are the pairs that make a number — 7 and 3 make 10, 9 and 7 make 16 — together with the subtractions that go with them. They matter because everything in Year 2 and beyond assumes them: column addition, mental methods, and later fractions and times tables all run faster when the small facts are known rather than counted.
My child counts on their fingers. Is that a problem?
Not at five or six. Fingers are a normal and useful representation, and children put them down when the facts become automatic. What is worth noticing is a child who counts from one every time rather than counting on from the bigger number, because that is a strategy that will not scale.
How can I help my Year 1 child with maths at home?
Count real objects out loud, play hiding games with number bonds, put an analogue clock somewhere visible, let them handle coins, cut food into halves and quarters using the word equal, and ask "how do you know?". Short, frequent and playful beats long and formal at this age.
Should I get a tutor for a Year 1 child?
Usually not. Most children this age need time, talk and play more than they need a weekly lesson. There are exceptions: a need the school has spotted but cannot resource, a move between curricula or countries, or a child who has already decided maths is not for them.
