A parent's guide to the Year 3 maths curriculum in England — the first year of key stage 2, when written methods arrive, the times tables get harder, and fractions stop being pictures and start being numbers.

What does a child learn in Year 3 maths?

Year 3 is the first year of key stage 2, and it is a real step up. Numbers go to 1,000, the formal column methods for addition and subtraction arrive, the 3, 4 and 8 times tables are added to the ones learned in Year 2, and fractions become numbers you can compare, order and add rather than parts of a shaded picture.

Two other things start here and are easy to miss. Telling the time to the minute, including Roman numerals on a clock face and the 24-hour clock — a bigger jump than the curriculum makes it sound. And perimeter, the first of the measurement formulae ideas that runs all the way to Year 6 area and volume.

The national curriculum describes lower key stage 2 — Years 3 and 4 — as being about becoming increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including the times tables, and developing efficient written and mental methods. That is the year in a sentence: not new kinds of maths so much as maths done properly and quickly.

There is no national test in Year 3. The multiplication tables check is Year 4 and the key stage 2 tests are Year 6.

Six areas, what each covers, and the mistake we see most often when we teach it.

Number and place value

Three-digit numbers, and counting in steps that are not 2, 5 or 10.

  • Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number
  • Recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number — hundreds, tens and ones
  • Compare and order numbers up to 1,000
  • Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
  • Read and write numbers up to 1,000 in numerals and in words
  • Solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas

What is 100 less than 512?

412. Only the hundreds digit changes — the thing to notice, not just the answer.

Where it usually goes wrong Numbers with a zero in the middle. 407 written as 4007, or read as "forty-seven", is the classic Year 3 place value slip.

Addition and subtraction

The column methods arrive. This is the biggest single change from Year 2.

  • Add and subtract mentally: a three-digit number and ones, tens, or hundreds
  • Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits using the formal columnar written methods
  • Estimate the answer, and use inverse operations to check it
  • Solve problems, including missing-number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex addition and subtraction
Example

82 − 47 = 35

You cannot take 7 from 2, so one ten is exchanged: 7 tens and 12 ones. That exchange is the whole method.

Where it usually goes wrong Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in each column, whichever way round they are — so 82 − 47 becomes 45. It is the error we see most in Year 3, and it comes from not understanding the exchange.

Multiplication and division

Three more times tables, and the first written multiplication of a two-digit number.

  • Recall and use the multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Write and calculate multiplication and division statements using the tables they know, including two-digit × one-digit, progressing to formal written methods
  • Solve problems including missing-number problems, integer scaling problems and correspondence problems in which n objects are connected to m objects
Example

The 8 times table is the 4 times table doubled.

4 × 6 = 24, so 8 × 6 = 48. Connections like this are why the 3, 4 and 8 tables are grouped together.

Where it usually goes wrong The 8 times table learned as a separate list to memorise. Taught as double the 4s, it takes a fraction of the time and it sticks better.

Fractions

The year fractions become numbers. Tenths appear, and so does equivalence.

  • Count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths come from dividing an object into 10 equal parts, or dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
  • Recognise, find and write fractions of a set of objects, unit and non-unit, with small denominators
  • Recognise and use fractions as numbers
  • Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole
  • Compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominator
  • Solve problems involving all of the above

5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7

The curriculum's own example. The sevenths do not change — you are counting how many of them there are.

Where it usually goes wrong Ordering unit fractions. ⅕ is smaller than ⅓, and children who read the bottom number as a size get it backwards. Cutting the same cake into 3 and into 5 settles it in a minute.

Measurement

Standard units used properly, money in a single unit, and the leap in telling the time.

  • Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths (m/cm/mm), mass (kg/g) and volume or capacity (l/ml)
  • Measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes
  • Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p
  • Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks
  • Estimate and read time to the nearest minute; record and compare time in seconds, minutes and hours
  • Know the number of seconds in a minute and days in each month, year and leap year
  • Compare durations of events
Example

A film starts at 14:35 and lasts 50 minutes. When does it finish?

15:25. Duration questions are where telling the time turns into arithmetic.

Where it usually goes wrong Time to the minute. It is a genuinely hard Year 3 objective, it is rarely finished by the end of the year, and nothing after Year 4 re-teaches it.

Geometry and statistics

Angles as turns, the first lines vocabulary, and reading two-step questions from charts.

  • Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes with modelling materials; recognise 3-D shapes in different orientations
  • Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn
  • Identify right angles; know that two make a half turn, three make three quarters and four a complete turn; tell whether an angle is greater or less than a right angle
  • Identify horizontal and vertical lines, and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines
  • Interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables
  • Solve one-step and two-step questions using information in scaled bar charts, pictograms and tables
Example

On a bar chart where each square is 5, how many does a bar reaching 3½ squares show?

17 and a half — or, more usefully, always read the scale before reading the bar.

Where it usually goes wrong Acute and obtuse become statutory in Year 4, though the Year 3 guidance already introduces the words for angles greater or less than a right angle; measuring angles in degrees is Year 5. The Year 3 work is right angles and turns.

The content is a step up, but the bigger change is what a child is expected to do without help.

Both columns from the national curriculum programmes of study. Schools cover the content in their own order, and are required to have taught it by the end of the key stage rather than the end of the year.

The Year 3 maths difficulties we see most

Four, and the first two account for most of what we are asked to fix in this year group.

Column subtraction with exchanging

The Year 3 difficulty we are asked about most. The method is usually fine; what is missing is understanding that a ten can become ten ones.

Try this at home

Give them 71 − 38 and ask them to talk you through it, one column at a time.

The answer is 33. If the explanation is "take the little one from the big one", the method has been copied rather than understood.

Where it usually goes wrong Worth help if it is still wrong in the spring term. Every later year's subtraction, including with decimals and money, is this same exchange.

Times tables that have not become automatic

Year 3 adds the 3s, 4s and 8s to the 2s, 5s and 10s. By the end of Year 4 all of them are checked nationally, so this is the year the habit of daily practice pays.

Try this at home

Fire four at them while the kettle boils: 4 × 7, 8 × 6, 24 ÷ 3, 32 ÷ 8.

Out of order is the point. In order, a child is reciting, not recalling.

Where it usually goes wrong The 8s and 4s taught as unrelated lists. Double the 4s to get the 8s, and half the work disappears.

Telling the time

To the minute, on an analogue face, with Roman numerals and a 24-hour equivalent. It is one of the hardest things in the year and one of the least practised.

Try this at home

Ask the time from a real clock several times a day, and sometimes ask how long until something.

The second question is the one that matters — duration is where time becomes maths.

Where it usually goes wrong Year 4 extends it to 12- and 24-hour clocks and then no later programme of study returns to reading an analogue face — so a gap here can sit unnoticed for years.

Fractions as numbers

Year 2 fractions were parts of a picture. Year 3 asks children to count in them, compare them and add them — which needs a fraction to be a number on a line.

Which is bigger, ¼ or ⅙? Fold a strip of paper to check.

¼. More pieces means smaller pieces — the idea that makes Year 5 and 6 fractions possible.

Where it usually goes wrong This is the year to fix a fractions misconception. It gets more expensive every year after.

Which times tables are learned in Year 3?
The 3, 4 and 8 times tables, and the division facts that go with them, on top of the 2, 5 and 10 tables from Year 2. All tables to 12 × 12 are expected by the end of Year 4, when there is a national multiplication tables check.
Is Year 3 maths harder than Year 2?
It is a noticeable step. Year 3 starts key stage 2, brings the formal column methods, adds three times tables, and asks children to treat fractions as numbers rather than pictures. Children who arrived with facts to 20 secure and a firm grasp of tens and ones usually manage it well.
Is there a test in Year 3?
No national test. The multiplication tables check is in Year 4 and the key stage 2 tests are in Year 6. Some schools run their own end-of-year assessments, which are for the school's use.
Does Year 3 include fractions?
Yes, and it is where fractions change character. Children count up and down in tenths, find fractions of sets of objects, recognise equivalent fractions using diagrams, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole, and compare and order unit fractions.
My child cannot do column subtraction. What should I do?
Give them one and ask for the reasoning aloud. If it comes out as "take the smaller from the bigger", the exchange has not been understood — and that is the fix, not more practice. Place value pictures alongside the digits usually settle it quickly, and it is worth doing because every later subtraction uses the same idea.
How can I help my Year 3 child with maths at home?
Practise times tables out of order for a few minutes a day, ask your child to explain a written method rather than checking the answer, ask the time from a real clock and how long until something, say place value out loud for three-digit numbers, and compare fractions with real food. Short and frequent.
How can a tutor help a Year 3 child?
One to one, a teacher can see whether a column method is understood or copied, find key stage 1 facts that are still being counted rather than recalled, and give time to the things a class of thirty rushes — telling the time being the usual one. Year 3 has no test, which makes it a good year to fix foundations properly.
Does a Year 3 child need a maths tutor?
Plenty do not. Year 3 has no test, and a child who is keeping up with the column methods and building their tables is usually fine with school plus a few minutes of practice at home. It is worth considering when column subtraction is still wrong in the spring term, when facts to 20 are still being counted rather than recalled, or when a child has changed school or missed a lot of teaching.
