CBSE maths follows the NCERT textbooks from Class 1 to Class 12, with board exams in Class 10 and Class 12. Two recent changes matter to UAE families: Class 10 now has two board exam opportunities, and NCERT has published a new Class 9 maths book for 2026–27.
What is ClassArc?
ClassArc is live one-to-one online maths tutoring for school-age children. One teacher and one child, for 55 minutes. The same teacher every week. Classes run inside our own classroom software, not a video call: a shared worksheet you both write on, a shared whiteboard, and answers that sync live.
The short answer
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) sets the syllabus and runs the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. NCERT, the National Council of Educational Research and Training, writes the textbooks. In maths the NCERT book effectively is the syllabus: board questions are written to it, and marking schemes expect its methods.
CBSE schools in the UAE start the academic year in April, take the summer break in July and August, and sit board exams from February. That puts CBSE families on a different rhythm from British and IB schools in the same city.
The Indian curriculum is the second-largest group in Dubai private schools, with about 26% of students on KHDA's 2024–25 figures. UAE CBSE schools use the same books, syllabus and board exams as schools in India.
Textbooks
The new books follow the National Curriculum Framework 2023. They teach many familiar topics in a new order, with more activities and more reasoning. Before buying a guide book or worksheet pack, check it matches your child's edition.

By stage
Primary CBSE maths builds place value, the four operations, fractions, measurement, money, time, shape and simple data. The newer books are activity-led, so homework can look more like puzzles than exercises. By the end of Class 5, fluent multiplication and division, including tables to 10 × 10, matters more than anything else, because Classes 6–8 assume it.
The middle years bring integers, fractions and decimals in depth, ratio and proportion, algebraic expressions and simple equations, angles and triangles, mensuration and data handling. Children who coasted through primary maths often first struggle here, usually because of a gap in fractions or negative numbers. It is also the easiest point to fix it, well before Class 9.
Class 9 has no board exam, but it lays much of the groundwork for Class 10: number systems, polynomials, coordinate geometry, Euclid's geometry, triangles, circles, mensuration, statistics and probability. Class 10 adds quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, trigonometry and its applications, and more.
Senior maths is a large step up, taken mostly by students heading for engineering, science, economics or commerce with maths. In Class 12, calculus alone carries 35 of the 80 theory marks. CBSE also offers Applied Mathematics in Classes 11–12, which some schools run for commerce and humanities students.
Class 10 marks
CBSE sets weightings by unit rather than chapter. These are the 2026–27 figures for Class 10 Mathematics.

Standard or Basic
Mathematics Standard (041) and Mathematics Basic (241) are both 80-mark, 3-hour papers on the same content. The difference is how many marks go to applying and analysing rather than recalling.

Standard is intended for students who may take maths in Class 11; Basic for those who will not. If science or commerce with maths is a possibility, Standard keeps the door open. For any exceptions, read CBSE's current rules rather than a coaching-centre summary.
Two board exams
CBSE now holds two Class 10 board examinations each year.
